Member Letter: Volunteerism through Indianapolis Ambassadors

I’ve been volunteering for about 5 years. I started by going to places that I thought would make a difference to the community. I make my own schedule for the week and leave the room for appointments when necessary. I volunteer for theaters, museums, gardens, food outreach, and festivals. I meet new people every time in volunteer experiences. Most have kind hearts and want to make a difference in our community.

One place I volunteer is Second Helpings. Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue organization working to fight hunger. I will cut veggies or help create a meal with different ingredients that the staff will want to use. As a volunteer you help prepare food by chopping vegetables, making sandwiches, and delivering meals to outreach organizations. There are all kinds of positions to check out.

Another organization I volunteer for is Heartland Film. Heartland film is a nonprofit art organization that runs an 11-day Heartland International Film Festival in October. They have Indy Shorts International Film Festival in July. Throughout the year, they offer many opportunities to volunteer at many different venues. Positions include ticketing guests, helping set up and tear down events, volunteer bartending for events and helping entertain young people attending gatherings (Background checks are completed).

During the month of May, our community has many opportunities to get in the spirit of the Indianapolis 500, The Greatest Spectacle of Racing. The 500 Festival is a non-profit community organization that fosters a positive impact on the city of Indianapolis and Indiana. This organization was created in 1957 to celebrate the Indianapolis 500 race itself. It is a community-oriented, philanthropic foundation that creates opportunities to volunteer from the marathon to the parade. I help pass out costumes for individuals in the 500 Festival Parade. I go to schools and lead discussions with students in elementary buildings to become familiar with the Indy Cars and what the flags designate on race day. The 500 Festival events continue to enrich the lives of individuals through its many programs.
