Group Volunteering Event: Earth Day Indiana

Please join us in volunteering at the Earth Day Festival and also celebrating our 35th Anniversary as a Festival on May 31st at our new location behind the Garfield Park Arts Center in Garfield Park. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities and times. We will be putting on many activities and hosting vendors, including live music, food trucks, children's activities, cyclist education, games, conservation and natural resources education, and arts & crafts. Here is some history on our event!

In 1970, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson organized the first Earth Day to bring national attention to conservation issues. Twenty million people joined in peaceful demonstrations – including 10,000 grade and high schools, 2,000 colleges in approximately 1,000 communities. In 1995, Nelson was awarded the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

By the 20th anniversary of Earth Day in 1990, interest in environmental issues had spread across the globe. In Indiana, volunteers organized a 20th anniversary Earth Day celebration in downtown Indianapolis. A short time later, they formed the nonprofit Earth Day Indiana organization to continue the event annually.

Our festival has grown to become what the national Earth Day Network has called one of the most successful annual Earth Day events in the country. The Earth Day Indiana Festival is the largest one-day environmental event in the state, and is free to all participants.

Indy Film Fest April 23rd-27th multiple shifts and downtown locations

Indy Film Fest, a 100% volunteer-driven organization, presents five days of independent movies, filmmaker meet-and-greets, and after-parties. The Fest is looking for volunteers to help patrons, filmmakers, and other guests attending the 22nd Indy Film Fest’s in-person events on April 23-27 at theaters in downtown Indianapolis.

Indy Ambassador Nikki Wenck says, "The annual festival is a great experience where you will have the opportunity to see short and feature length films from the U.S. and around the world including documentaries and narratives, and even some from local Indiana filmmakers."

500 Festival: Mini Marathon and 5K May 3rd in Downtown Indy

Voted "America's Best Half Marathon," this event brings over 20,000 participants from around the world and promises an iconic adventure you won't want to miss! The mini-marathon begins and ends in the heart of Indianapolis and includes a lap around the historic Indianapolis Speedway!

General Meeting: Wed. May 7th, 6pm-8pm at the Indiana University Natatorium - Indianapolis

All are invited to the May General Meeting of the Indianapolis Ambassadors at the Indiana University Natatorium - Indianapolis. The "Nat" is the largest indoor aquatic facility in the United States with a seating capacity of 4,700 and has hosted events ranging from high school meets to national level meets such as the Olympic Trials. Over 100,000 competitive swimmers and fans frequent the IU Natatorium annually.

Originally built in 1982, the IU Natatorium recently underwent a $20 million renovation, upgrading nearly every aspect of the facility. These enhancements ensure it will remain a premier aquatic destination for years to come. Come learn about the vital role that volunteers play in events hosted by at the IU Natatorium.

Their children had been born with disabilities like Down syndrome and autism. At that time, parents of children with disabilities were expected to institutionalize their sons and daughters or keep them hidden at home. Going to school was not even an option.

However, our founding parents knew that their children could learn and were eager to do so. They could achieve their goals, realize their dreams and contribute significantly to the world around them. Over the years, Noble, Inc. has evolved to meet the changing needs of the people we serve. Now, Noble empowers 3,700+ children & adults with disabilities and their loved ones in Central and Eastern Indiana through a variety of supports each year.

The Indianapolis Ambassadors enjoyed another unique social Wednesday. A special group of us braved the road construction for a fun evening at Twin Peaks Castleton. After all where can you get a free tasting of whiskey and vodka in a lodge setting? But when we arrived we were told they weren’t doing the tasting due to staffing and construction. Well your fearless President quickly found management and told her our plans for the social. She quickly compromised and we enjoyed a private tasting of five new or unique concoctions. It was fun to experience the tasting together and talk about our impressions and critiques.

The real fun of the evening was the same as it always is for me at our socials. The opportunity to spend time together that we don’t have when we’re volunteering or going to meetings. I am always happy to spend time with the Ambassadors I see often, the ones I haven’t seen for a while and the new folks.

When we gather socially, we create a connection of camaraderie. Indianapolis Ambassadors is an eclectic group of incredible people. I have learned about some of the amazing things they have accomplished, places they have been and what their plans are for the future. I’m thankful to the members who come out to our socials. There is never a dull moment. Lots of laughter. Fun places. Wonderful people.

WAX Artist Reception Fri. Apr. 25th 6-9pm at the Global Village Welcome Center

CICOA Aging and In-Home Solutions is a non-profit organization in Indianapolis that provides support and assistance to seniors and their families. Formerly known as the Central Indiana Council on Aging, CICOA’s services cover various needs ranging from housing to caregiver support.

While the organization focuses on supporting aging adults, its services extend to people of all ages, including children with medical or developmental disabilities who are unable to live independently. The goal is to enhance the quality of life for children and families caring for older adults and people with disabilities in Indiana.

The CICOA Volunteer Program will connect you with people and programs that will utilize your skills and talents to make a difference to others in our community.

The Songbook Foundation Team was thrilled to host the Indianapolis Ambassadors this week at the Payne and Mencias Palladium! I was impressed by your group and the passion everyone has for serving the community.

The Songbook Foundation is all about celebrating and preserving the timeless music of the American Songbook. Founded in 2007 by GRAMMY nominated performer, Michael Feinstein, the Foundation is based at Allied Solutions Center in Carmel. Through its vast Library & Archives, interactive exhibits, and the Songbook Hall of Fame, it keeps this musical legacy alive for future generations. The Foundation serves as a source of research for scholars, musicologists, and historians. It offers educational programs like the annual high school Songbook Academy®, a weeklong summer performance intensive. The Foundation provides free monthly music resources through Perfect Harmony®, a program to help care partners engage seniors through music. As a Cultural Affiliate of the GRAMMY Museum®, the Foundation is dedicated to inspiring and educating through the music that shaped American culture. You can learn more about us at TheSongbook.org.

As a small organization, we rely on volunteers to help us do what we do! The Songbook Academy® is a fast-paced week with many moving parts and a variety of ways to help. Starting this fall, we plan to open our exhibit space before all shows at the Palladium. For this ambitious project, we will need gallery attendants and docents. We look forward to connecting with you on these and future volunteer opportunities.

500 Festival Mini-Marathon & 5K Expo May 1st and 2nd at Lucas Oil Stadium

The 500 Festival Mini-Marathon Expo is the exciting start to Mini-Marathon weekend in Indianapolis! All Indy Mini & 5K participants are required to pick up race materials at the Expo. The Expo will take place on Thursday, May 1, from 4:00 - 8:00 pm, and Friday, May 2, from 10:00 am - 8:00 pm. The Mini-Marathon Expo features interactive activities and exhibitors for all ages. The Expo is free and open to the public and a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy the excitement of the Mini-Marathon.

The Central Indiana Wilderness Club (CIWC) is a non-profit volunteer-run club organized for the purpose of providing affordable wilderness adventures. Based in central Indiana, our activities include backpacking, car camping, day hiking, bicycling, canoeing, kayaking, rafting and cross-country skiing.

Each year CIWC conducts trips ranging in length from one to ten days to destinations as diverse as southern Indiana, the Grand Canyon and the Smokey Mountains. We have day events, overnight trips for beginners and extended trips for those with lots of outdoor experience and everything in between. On a CIWC trip you will have the opportunity to explore new places, learn new skills and meet new friends. Our overnight trips are small and friendly, averaging eight people per trip, organized by a CIWC member. Our membership includes members who vary widely in age, experience and ability.

Fun, Frolic, Friendships, Food and Facts. This describes our fantastic social at the District Tap. A few years ago, I played trivia with Indianapolis Ambassadors and I was struct by their intelligence and competitive nature. The only correct answer I gave that night was…. What is the name of Paris Hilton’s dog? Well, Tinkerbell I exclaimed! I’m actually quite proud because I was the only one in the bar who knew the answer! Haha .

Our gathering this time included new and seasoned members, spanning several decades of age groups. We had great camaraderie and worked together as a team named the Hot Shots. We took an early lead and remained in 1st place as we competed against 16 teams. Answer after answer, through several rounds, I was astonished by my fellow Ambassadors. We all have different perspectives and knowledge which made the evening even more fun. Indianapolis Ambassadors are smart and fun. Late in the trivia game, a couple obscure questions knocked us down to 5th place. But nonetheless, the Hot Shots are always winners in my book.

Socializing allows us to know each other on a different level which is an important aspect of Indianapolis Ambassadors. I definitely want us to have a trivia social again. For the meantime, I’ll keep watching jeopardy to expand my knowledge base! Maybe next time we we will bring home the trophy .

Hi, my name is Shari Zee and I am the treasurer of the Indianapolis Ambassadors. I want to share with you one of the many reasons that I love being involved with the Ambassadors. We recently had the opportunity to volunteer at the gala fundraiser for Noble Inc., Noble Evening in the Garden. Held at the fairgrounds, the night before the Flower and Patio show opens, it is a beautiful evening in the gardens. Twenty-eight of us volunteered at a wonderful event featuring great food, drink, music, magicians, and psychics. It was a great time for a great cause! This is just one of many opportunities to not only support the non-profit organizations in our community, but to spend time with a great group of fun people. Hope to see you soon!

Inaugural Head for the Cure 5K Sun, Apr 5 9am at White River State Park

Join Head for the Cure Foundation for their Inaugural Head for the Cure 5K – Indianapolis as they raise funds, awareness, and hope for the Indianapolis brain tumor community! Funds raised through this event will locally benefit brain tumor research at X, Brains for the Cure, and other national brain cancer programs, education, and initiatives.

WFYI's Día del Niño at Be My Neighbor Day! Sat. April 26th at the Central Library

Volunteers are needed to support this family-friendly community event from WFYI. Needs include welcoming and checking in guests, assisting guests with writing and mailing letters, applying temporary tattoos, assisting guests with crafts, helping Daniel Tiger throughout the day, taking photos, and much more!

OneAmerica Financial Broad Ripple Art Fair Sat-Sun May 17-18 at the Indy Art Center

The OneAmerica Financial Broad Ripple Art Fair is a nationally ranked, highly selective, juried art fair that benefits the Indy Art Center and hosts 150+ local, regional, and national artists.

"As the Indy Art Center’s largest annual fundraiser, we depend on volunteers from the community, and we could not do this without you!

Rebuilding Together Indianapolis is a local nonprofit that focuses on repairing homes, revitalizing communities, and rebuilding lives. We’ve been in the Indianapolis community since 1999, completing repairs for over 400 homeowners during that timeframe.

Once again, the Ambassadors came together to staff a pit station for the 500 Festival's 6-Miler Run. Last Saturday, fourteen of us supplied much needed refreshments and cheered on the runners. It's thrilling to see 1,500 people racing toward you as you furiously pour and hand out drinks with your fellow volunteers. It was a lot of fun for all as we reconnected with old friends and made some great new ones!

We were fortunate to be assigned Pit Station #1. That meant we were the first to be visited and the first to break down and move on to our next destination. For ten of us, that was the Lincoln Square Pancake House where we got to enjoy each other's company with some delicious brunch!

Heather Williamson of the 500 Festival said, "Thank you SO MUCH again for you and your group volunteering with us this weekend! I hope you all had a great time!"

We use the 2025 Annual Survey to find people to participate in events like this. If you haven't done so, make sure you get yours in. And keep your eyes open for fun opportunities to volunteer with the Indianapolis Ambassadors!

Changing Footprints Donations Sorting Mar 13 thru 30 on the Northside

Changing Footprint is MOVING! Sorting and bagging assistance is needed from March 11-31. We will be focused on getting our 20,000 pairs of shoes sorted & rebagged, and moved out to our storage units.

Changing Footprints realizes the great need for shoes around the world as protection from diseases and a gateway to education. Because of that need we collect new and gently used shoes for distribution to homeless, disaster-stricken, or underprivileged people locally, nationally, and internationally regardless of race, religion, gender, or ethnicity. We are a nonprofit, registered 501(c)3 organization.

Special Olympics: Men's & Women's State Basketball Championships Apr 5th-6th at the Pacers Athletic Center, Grand Park in Westfield

We’d love for you to sign up for as many shifts as you’re available; just be sure to avoid any scheduling conflicts! And feel free to invite a friend to volunteer with you—it’s always more fun with a buddy!

Pinewood Derby Mar 26 thru Apr 6 at the Indiana State Museum

The second greatest spectacle in racing returns to the Indiana State Museum! The museum will host a two story, 125-foot Pinewood Derby Track where racers can test their derby cars on the tallest, longest, and fastest track of its kind. This track is open to the public from March 26th-April 6th with the official race taking place on April 5th and we need volunteers like you to make this event a success. We have three positions available for volunteers each day from 9:45am-5pm. These positions are broken into two shifts: one morning and one evening.

Community Action of Greater Indianapolis, Inc. (CAGI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the reduction and ultimate elimination of poverty among the clients in its service area. Currently, we serve more than 40,000 households and 100,000 residents of Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, Marion and Tipton Counties in Indiana.

A hidden gem of Indianapolis is the historic Allison Mansion. It’s nestled on the campus of Marian University. In 1970 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The history is fascinating and spans over 100 years. I am very passionate about taking us to intriguing places. There is so much to learn and experience about Indianapolis. At our General Meetings, we explore places that caught our interest but we knew very little about. Our tours and speakers have taught us so much over the years. Technology Corner - Slack

The Indianapolis Ambassadors are using Slack for coordinating our volunteer-related activities. Slack is a messaging app from Salesforce that we use to connect volunteers. It includes instant messaging. voice and video calls, polling, and more. Slack can be accessed via your smartphone or computer.

'The Play That Goes Wrong' Apr. 9th thru May 11th at Indiana Repertory Theatre

IndyGo is looking for energetic and enthusiastic volunteer leaders to become an IndyGo Transit Neighbor or Transit Ambassador. As a Neighbor, you’ll help IndyGo build a strong relationship with the communities we serve by being a communications link to your community and IndyGo. Transit ambassadors for IndyGo teach people how to ride the bus, answer their questions and represent IndyGo at community events. In return, these volunteers get a $60 monthly stipend and a free bus pass.

Indy Ambassadors at the IU Natatorium - Indianapolis

Greetings Indy Ambassadors! Did you know that the Indiana University Natatorium - Indianapolis is recognized as one of the top aquatic venues in the country even after 43 years? This iconic facility has hosted everything from Olympic Trials and NCAA Championships through age group competitions while also being open to the community for learn-to-swim and water safety programs.

Much of the success of events at the "Nat" can be attributed to the wonderful volunteer culture in the Indianapolis community led by the Indianapolis Ambassadors. Witnessing first hand the contributions and camaraderie of the Indy Ambassadors at our events has inspired my husband and me to become members of this special organization!

We hope that you will consider joining our volunteer team at the Nat for the upcoming USA Swimming Speedo Sectionals from March 26-30. This event, one of our largest of the year, will feature close to 900 of the country's up-and-coming high school and college athletes. We would love to have you back with us in June as we host USA Swimming's National Championships from June 3-7 and the Indy Summer Cup from June 25-28.

As an Indianapolis Ambassador, we would welcome any time you can give even if it's just for one shift. All volunteers receive complimentary meals and parking during their volunteer shifts as well as a commemorative meet t-shirt and pre-event virtual orientation. We look forward to seeing you in March! General Meeting: Wed. Mar 5th 6-8pm in the Allison Mansion at Marian University

All are invited to the March General Meeting of the Indianapolis Ambassadors. James Allison, an Indianapolis entrepreneur and one of the founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, commissioned the mansion as part of his 64-acre Riverdale estate in the early 1900s. The exterior is a blend of early Prairie School and Lombardy Villa architecture, designed by Indianapolis architect Herbert Bass. Master landscape architect Jens Jensen, known as the “Prophet of the Prairie” for his use of native plants and Midwestern imagery, designed the grounds. Come learn how volunteers can contribute at this incredible attraction.

Nowruz: Persian New Year Celebration Sat Mar 22nd 12-4pm at the Global Village Welcome Center

Join artists Parisa Kay and Sepideh Motevasel for a celebration ushering in the Persian New Year. Enjoy talks, performances, activities, and Persian cuisine. The Global Village Welcome Center needs volunteers to help make this event a success.

Indy Reads is a literacy nonprofit organization that offers adults classes where they can learn to improve their English learning, language, and literacy skills, as well as their high school equivalency diplomas and workforce credentials.

To understand the importance of what Indy Reads does, you only need to think about what you are doing right now. You are reading. It is a process so automatic for most of us, that we rarely think about its power. People with low literacy must gather information through talking, listening, and remembering. If they misunderstand initially or forget, that information is lost to them.

Adult literacy education helps break the cycle of intergenerational poverty, opening the door for adults to navigate daily challenges, access employment, pursue higher education, make informed decisions about health and well-being, and actively engage in civic life.

Super Bowl Social Recap

February 9, 2025 marked the 59th Superbowl event in US history. Over the years, the Superbowl has become a cultural phenomenon that has transcended into one of the largest social events within the United States and each and every year it has grown in popularity in the world.

The Superbowl is not only viewed as a sporting event but also seen as a convergence of consumerism and entertainment. The commercials and the shows viewed before and during the Superbowl are just as popular as the football game itself. This event provides a perfect opportunity to gather with family, friends, and colleagues to celebrate the shared experience of watching the game, enjoying some food and engaging in conversation.

My name is Dr. Denise Durham, the Public Relations Officer serving on the Board of Directors for the Indianapolis Ambassadors and one of the co-hosts of Sunday's Superbowl party. I partnered with Titto Augustine and Chris Blair to host this event. Our event was held at the Cosmopolitan on the Canal on Michigan St. in Indianapolis. This party was a successful gathering of 23 individuals who came together to discuss and react to the football game, ate good food, and watched the pre-game and half-time game entertainment.

'Sensitive Guys' Feb 28th thru Mar 15th at IF Theatre

Front of House and Bartender Volunteers Needed. The Men’s Peer Education group at Watson College is dedicated to unpacking and exposing male privilege. These “sensitive guys” believe that through increased self-awareness they can end sexual violence on campus; but when a shocking rumor surfaces, the group is shaken to the core. Sensitive Guys features a cast of women and gender nonconforming actors, double-cast as male and female characters, who try to understand men who are trying to understand masculinity.

USA Swimming: Speedo Sectionals Mar 27th-30th at the IU Natatorium

The Indiana University Natatorium – Indianapolis is honored to be the host for USA Swimming’s 2025 Central Zone East Spring Speedo Sectionals in March.

This event will feature approximately 850 athletes from across the country racing in one of the first long-course competitions of USA Swimming’s new Quad. The Nat opens for team registration and practice on Wednesday afternoon, March 26, followed by four days of exciting long course competition, beginning on Thursday, March 27, and concluding on Sunday, March 30. Prelims begin each competition day at 8:30 AM with finals at 5:30 PM (4:30 PM on Sunday).

Volunteers are now being recruited to serve in a variety of capacities. We hope you can join our Team Indy @ the Nat volunteer team in March. Fun, food, and fellowship are guaranteed!

500 Festival: April Study Trips Mar 31 thru Apr 21 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The 500 Festival & Indianapolis 500 Education Program, presented by Indiana University Health, is a free program for Indiana fourth-grade classrooms that immerses students in the world of the Indianapolis 500 and 500 Festival! The Education Program equips fourth-grade educators with engaging lesson plans and classroom materials that allow students to explore the significant role of the 500 Festival and the Indianapolis 500 in Indiana’s state history and culture.

Participating fourth-grade classrooms have the opportunity to attend a Study Trip that takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in April! During the visit, students will put classroom lessons into action at interactive, hands-on educational stations located around the track.

Kurt Vonnegut was a World War II soldier and prisoner of war, peace activist, free speech champion, bestselling writer, artist, father, and lover of jazz, comedy, theater, and film. At the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library, we conduct tours of our museum’s diverse and accessible exhibitions. Members borrow books from our lending library. Students, teachers, veterans, and prisoners benefit from our programs that encourage storytelling to “make your soul grow.”

From its German foundation in the 1800s, our gorgeous building is one of the few remaining buildings from the period when Indiana Avenue was known nationwide for its rich jazz history and Black excellence in business and culture. Our Bokonon Lounge is more than a bar but also a space that people use for weddings, birthday parties, and more.

One of the main missions of Indianapolis Ambassadors is Education.  As volunteers, we like to learn more about the city we love.  Our general meetings have taken us places we wanted to learn more about or places we have never seen.  We learn history, get to see behind the scenes and find interesting facts.  This new knowledge gives our members new incentives to volunteer and promote venues or organizations.

Personally, one of my favorite tasks is to help find the next great place for a general meeting.  In this journey, I have met some of the most interesting and kind volunteer coordinators.  They are grateful for our members because we are interested, engaging, reliable and communicative.  I throughly enjoy getting to know them better and can’t wait for our members to meet them.  These volunteer coordinators are the heart of Indianapolis.  Their passion and love of the city keeps volunteerism thriving and beating strong.

Wednesday night we gathered at the Indianapolis Ballet with Jeffrey Marks, the Volunteer Coordinator/Development Associate.  He was such a gracious host and we learned so much from him.  Jeffrey is an asset to the arts community and his enthusiasm shines brightly.  Enjoy the interview and I hope to see you at the next general meeting.

Group Volunteering Opportunity - 500 Festival Six-Miler - Mar 8th 8:30-11am

For the third consecutive year, the 500 Festival has chosen the Indianapolis Ambassadors to host a pit station for their Miler Series of runs/walks. We need your help to make our refreshment station cheerful and efficient for the runners who pass by. We will set up tables, pour drinks of Gatorade and water, hand them to the runners and walkers as they zoom by, and then we clean up and break down the tables. Optional brunch after.

On March 22, 2025, Indianapolis Opera will celebrate a monumental accomplishment… 50 years of bringing opera to Indianapolis and beyond! To celebrate this occasion, we are hosting our ” 50th Anniversary Legacy Gala and Concert” and we need volunteers like you to make this event a success.

We realize that downtown parking may be prohibitive to some. Therefore, we will reimburse you for parking fees. Additionally, we will provide dinner for you, as the duties will fall around the dinner hour. As our thank you for your valuable help and support, we also invite you to watch the concert free of charge.

Known as the state’s premier art and food experience, the Indiana Artisan Marketplace features two fun-filled days in the spring to engage with artists, see their work, watch them create, taste their foods, sample their wines, and buy the best in Hoosier craftsmanship.

The Indianapolis Public Library was founded in 1873 and has grown to include its flagship Central Library and 24 branch libraries located throughout the county. In 2021, the public library system circulated 7.1 million items and hosted more than 2,500 programs for its 282,000 cardholders.

With the launch of Indianapolis Ballet in 2018, the presence of a professional resident ballet company returned to the Circle City for the first time in over a decade. Focusing on making extraordinary ballet and dance performances accessible to all, the company serves as a home to exceptional talent with local, national, and international ties as well as an inspiration to the next generation of talented dancers growing up in Central Indiana.

Volunteering with IB and ISB offers a chance to support the Indianapolis arts community and support the dreams of our dancers. If you're seeing snowmen, it must be survey time. Each January, the board collects information from our members so we can craft a year of exciting volunteer opportunities. Your responses help to build a better service, so please complete the survey right away.

Technically, there are only five questions (we already filled in three of them for you). You could literally press two buttons to complete this survey.

Lunar New Year Celebration - Sat Feb 1 (Noon - 4pm) at the Global Village Welcome Center

Enjoy a day full of performances including traditional folk dance and music. Learn about Lunar New Year fashion, enjoy craft activities, food, and a special Lunar New Year market as we welcome the Year of the Snake in this family friendly event. Guests are encouraged to attend in red or traditional outfits from East and Southeast Asia.

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a free and impartial counseling program for people with Medicare. SHIP is provided by the Administration for Community Living and the Indiana Department of Insurance. We are part of a federal network of State Health Insurance Assistance Programs located in every state.

SHIP provides free, impartial information to help consumers make decisions regarding health insurance options related to Medicare. We strive to help them be wise consumers and to get the most value for their Medicare health insurance dollars.

SHIP is staffed by a crew of volunteer counselors who have completed an intensive four-day training course and are certified by the IDOI. Regular training updates keep them current with the most recent changes in Medicare and other health care insurance options. Learn more about becoming a SHIP Volunteer. SHIP counselors are committed volunteers who offer you free and objective assistance in complete confidence.

• Assist through an 800 help line, virtually, or at local sites in most Indiana counties.
• Offer one-on-one health insurance counseling for people with Medicare.
• Present on related topics in local communities throughout the state.

Our Visit to Exodus Refugee Immigration

What an engaging, informative general meeting we had at the Exodus Refuge Center in Indy. We learned about the difference in funding for refugees versus asylum seekers and migrants. The center has a wonderful outreach to the refugee community that beckons all of us to volunteer.

Celebrate MLK Day at Eiteljorg with FREE admission

Visit the Eiteljorg on Monday, Jan. 20 for the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when museum admission is FREE. This is also the final day to experience the Fifth Third Bank Jingle Rails: The Great Western Adventure this season. Look for the latest addition to the model railroad: the new replica of the Madam Walker Theatre. The free MLK Day celebration will include a community drum circle and art-making events.

Twenty years later, in the wake of Molly's sudden death, her 12-year-old daughter, Hazel, knocks on Rae's door asking questions. Wildly entertaining, this play daringly presents the grey space that true crime gives women to face their worst fears.

Visit with fellow Indianapolis Ambassadors as we experience the magic of cinema and the convenience of push button service for food and drinks. This venue brings a fresh take to the local entertainment scene with luxurious, heated recliner seating, chef-inspired dining and an atmosphere infused with the city’s racing heritage.

The movie selection will be based on availability and determined one week prior to the event date. Movies are only $7 on Tuesdays.

Once again, the Indianapolis Ambassadors have been invited to help Noble make their annual spring fundraiser a big success.

This fundraiser is “a fabulous preview gala to the Indiana Flower & Patio Show and will feature specialties from top restaurants, live music, interactive entertainment, a Silent Auction & more in the beautiful gardens at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Noble’s mission is to “expand opportunities and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families through individualized services.”

Fighting cancer is tough enough, but it’s even harder when you don’t have medical insurance or the resources to afford proper care. Little Red Door Cancer Agency strives to make the most of life and the least of cancer by reducing the physical, emotional, and financial burdens of cancer for the medically underserved residents of central Indiana.

Little Red Door provides clients with basic information about cancer, the importance of timely follow-up, and community resources to help meet basic needs before, during and after treatment. They offer services to help people with appearance-related side effects of cancer treatments. Cancer patients can get transportation assistance to treatment appointments. See services. When kindness becomes a habit, it improves our health.

Volunteering time and effort for a noble cause is an act of kindness. Research suggests that when we make acts of kindness a habit, our personal health benefits. When we help others, in addition to boosting happiness and psychological well-being, it favors our own physical health.

University of Maryland researchers recently examined the relationship of volunteering with cognitive behavior, social activity, and physical welfare among older adults. They found that volunteering bolsters brain functioning in older adulthood, primarily mediated by increased cognitive activity.

Participants of an intergenerational civic engagement trial spent at least 15 hours a week volunteering to tutor underprivileged kids. Older adults not only felt productive with their contributions, but also benefitted from the improved mental and physical well-being. The same trial also found that purposeful activity embedded within a social health promotion program halted dementia in general and reversed declines in brain volume in regions such as the cortex and particularly, the hippocampus, a region vulnerable to dementia, in men.

A 4-year follow-up study conducted on 12,998 participants found volunteering ≥100 hours/year (approximately 2 hours/week) was associated with reduced risk of mortality and physical functioning limitations. Volunteering also led to higher physical activity and better psychosocial outcomes such as higher positive affect, optimism and purpose in life and lower depressive symptoms, hopelessness, loneliness, and infrequent contact with friends. The growing adult population possesses a vast array of skills and experiences that can be leveraged for the greater good of society.

Volunteering and informal acts of kindness, such as helping a neighbor, have been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Additional research shows high schoolers engaged in volunteering activities with younger students exhibit healthier body mass index, healthier inflammatory markers, and healthier total cholesterol.

Hopelessness and despair threaten health and longevity. Prosociality contributes to better mental and physical health for us, and for the communities in which we live. Hence, prosociality should be a public health priority. Prosociality applies systemically to communal health via behaviors such as donating money to charity and/or volunteering time.

Selective and enjoyable volunteering can be useful in reducing the burden of age-related cognitive decline and neurocognitive disorders. Public health policies to increase accessibility of volunteering opportunities are an innovative way of simultaneously enhancing society and fostering a trajectory of healthy aging in the large and rapidly growing population of older adults.

Group Volunteering Opportunity - Gleaners Food Bank

Did you know that nearly a quarter of all children living in Marion County are food insecure? That's 25,000 kids!

The good news is that we can do something about it. A couple years ago, we got a group together to work a drive thru pantry at Gleaners Food Bank. It was a lot fun and a great way to help our neighbors.

At Seeds of Caring, we imagine a future with more kindness, more empathy, and more inclusiveness. It all starts with our future generation. Our kids deserve a world that is kinder, more just, and more connected than the one we live in today. Seeds of Caring works to turn this vision into reality, offering service projects for kids—empowering them to make a real difference through service, social action, and community-building projects.

We are raising a generation of kids who are change-makers and bridge-builders. Together, we teach children about the causes of social issues, break down barriers that prevent us from living in full community with one another, and encourage our youth to use their hearts, hands, and minds for good. Together, we are creating a brighter tomorrow. Join us!

On January 20th, our 2nd annual MLK Day of Youth Service will be our only in person event. It's a day dedicated to honoring Dr. King’s legacy of service. Families and small groups with kids under 13 will volunteer to benefit local organizations PLUS create take-home art at the Madam Walker Legacy Center.

We have made so many memories in 2024 with Indianapolis Ambassadors. It’s the time of year when we reflect on our lives, goals, triumphs and those things that fell short of our expectations. This has been a great year for us. We welcomed many new members and got to know each other better. I believe it’s the personal connections that makes IA great. Doing something for good with like minded people. Making a difference in the city we love by volunteering. I am so proud to be an Indianapolis Ambassador with you. Time and time again I received feedback from organizers about how much they appreciate us. Our members are reliable, informed, passionate and friendly. We are relied on to help showcase Indianapolis to others.
Each of you has your own perspective and memories of 2024.

Take a few minutes to reflect on what you enjoyed doing concerning IA. Was it a social like the Murder Mystery dinner or Turkeyfest? Was it a General Meeting at ICAN with the dogs or touring and learning about Indiana Landmarks? Was it the dinner after at places like Condado Tacos or the Rathskeller? Was your favorite volunteering experience selling $7000 worth of popcorn at ISO or helping with the Olympic Swimming Trials? Or was it the Christmas Party where everyone won a gift?

I challenge you to think about how you will make an impact with Indianapolis Ambassadors in 2025.

• Reach out to a new member and invite them to an event?

The Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition is a network of food pantries,run exclusively by volunteers, working to eliminate hunger in Hendricks County.

We always need volunteers from our community to help with the many pantry activities. Volunteers help clients select food and sort and stock the shelves. They also assist with picking up donations from local stores and businesses. Consider volunteering once a week, once a month or whatever is convenient with your schedule. All ages are welcomed, and volunteering can be a great family activity.

Christmas cheer is a funny thing
Waiting for Santa and what he brings
Not toys or chocolate or ginger beer
But lots of friends to make us cheer
and celebrate another year!

Merry Christmas to all.

1. Beer after whiskey is very risky. I know we have heard this before but believe it or not, it’s true.
2. A pig in a poke.
   Online shopping is not always; get what you think. (It means let the buyer beware).
3. Expectations and reality are two different things. To enjoy the moment and let the expectations go away is much more enjoyable.
4. Fe fi fo fum... , That is what you say when you get that horrible Christmas tie, fruitcake or another funny (to someone) coffee mug.

Group Volunteer Opportunity - Indiana Diaper Bank

I had the opportunity to volunteer with the Indiana Diaper Bank a few years ago. It was a chill, fun experience. There were several tables, each with a different size diaper that needed sorting and packing. We were able to sit and chat enjoying each other’s company while performing a needed service to help the diaper bank with their mission to eliminate diaper need in our community by providing a reliable and adequate supply of diapering essentials. At the end of the volunteer event, the total number of diapers packed was shared with the group so we could understand the impact of our time in service.

If you’d like to join a group of Ambassadors for a volunteer event at the Indiana Diaper Bank, please fill out the volunteer interest form.

Another way to support the Indiana Diaper Bank is via the 5th annual #ShareTheLove Diaper Drive. The goal is to raise $30,000 (120,000 diapers) to help over 4,800 families in need. The drive ends 12/31. Please donate if you can.

Rising Pursuit Services: Sneaker Ball Sat., Jan. 18, 7-10:30P at the West Fork Whiskey Co. in Westfield

Rising Pursuit Services supports adults 18 and above, with intellectual and developmental disabilities socially, mentally, emotionally, and physically at the Adult Day Program located in the Castleton area. Sneaker Ball includes individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, family friends and all supporters in the community. This event, which will consist of divine dancing and dining, will take place at the Northside Events and Social Club from 7pm-10:30pm.

Jingle Rails: The Great Western Adventure - Now thru Jan 20th at the Eiteljorg

Jingle Rails is a whimsical model railroad featuring nine G-scale electric trains that ramble over trestles and through tunnels along more than 1,200 feet of track. Trains wind past woodsy, artistic representations of the skyline of Downtown Indianapolis and landmarks of the American West, all made from natural materials. Santa Claus is coming to town! Volunteers are needed to help the museum with their annual holiday celebration featuring visits with the big guy himself!
