American Red Cross

The Indiana Region serves 6.9 million people across 104 counties in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Illinois. The American Red Cross has been serving the people of Indiana for more than 100 years. Translate your care and concern for people down the street, across the country and around the world through our humanitarian work.

Mission
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Vision
The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that:

  • all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope;
  • everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products;
  • our communities are ready and prepared for disasters;
  • all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed; and
  • in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.

Volunteer Needs

Disaster Services

The Red Cross helps individuals, families, and communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. From home fires to tornadoes to floods, the Red Cross is there to provide hope and help.

  • Prepare – Volunteers are needed to support programming such as conducting workshops on the importance of preparedness, presenting at community events, participating in the Home Fire Campaign to educate around and install smoke alarms, and teaching youth coping skills and tools when faced with emergencies through the Pillowcase Project. [Volunteers fluent in other languages (Spanish, French, Burmese, Hakha Chin, Arabic, and Chinese in particular) are needed in an effort to reach all community members.]
  • Respond – Volunteers are needed for a variety of response roles including those who respond in-person, those who coordinate efforts behind-the-scenes, those who provide their medical expertise, those who provide their mental health expertise, and those who provide their public affairs expertise. [Most of these roles require on-call hours (volunteers sign up for shifts based on their availability). These roles require volunteers to be at least 18 years of age, commit to at least 1 year of service, and attend approximately 20 hours of prerequisite training.]
  • Recover – Volunteers are needed to assist clients with resources after a disaster has occurred.

Facilities

Our Facilities department utilizes volunteers in a variety of roles, from groups who assist with vehicle cleaning to individuals who help with front desk service or fix-it projects around the building.

Health & Safety

Volunteer with our Health and Safety department to be an integral part of teaching lifesaving skills. Volunteers are needed to present information on available classes to interested groups, teach CPR and First Aid, assist with class logistics and help out with administrative work in the office.

Service to the Armed Forces

Volunteer with our Service to the Armed Forces department to support military members and their families. Volunteers are needed to assist with outreach (such as briefing on Red Cross services at pre-deployment events or sorting and delivering holiday cards for active and veteran military members) and to help in a variety of capacities at VA hospitals.
